Community Analysis

It was awesome doing the community analysis with a school in the area in which I grew up. I sat in with the librarian for 3 hours and realized she does exactly what I want to do with my life. I also realized that the community is more diverse than I originally thought. Collection development must consider the diverse socio-economic population as well as the diverse ethnic population of the school. I was somewhat surprised that being from the Bible belt South that there haven't been any censorship complaints at Taylorsville Elementary School since Amy Dawson, the Media Specialist, has been at the school. So I am excited to get my report typed up and feature a county that I love. I was however surprised that the Media Coordinator used an Activ Board and knew exactly how to use it...the children did too. It was more technologically advanced than I had thought it would be :).

On our way

My group decided last night to chose the topic of sexuality for our controversal topic. I have already done some research and the App. State Library is sending me Censoring Sex by John Semonche. There are many controversal issues dealing with censorship in libraries - especially in this area - and I think we will have to narrow down our topic. I am thinking homosexuality could be a good place to start. I think this project is going to help me determine my philosophy on censorship also...because right now I just feel that most every book has a right to be read and appreciated...however, maybe not by all audiences. So we will see. My group is planning a virtual world meeting on Friday at 10:00 pm.
