Meeting in AET Zone

I enjoyed meeting in AET Zone for class the other night. It was interesting and I think it would be very productive once we all get the hang of our headphones and downloading things to present. I am glad that I go to experience that and I actually talked more in that discussion than I ever would in class. I hate speaking in front of people but I can type in front of them. Overall, it was an experience I am glad I have now. I still like to learn in a teacher/class actual environment...I probably pay attention better that way, though I think the reason I drifted in the AET Zone is because all we were talking about for a while was how to get your mich to work and mine already did. Only one more class to go and we have our presentations during that class for copyright and also censorship. I think it will be a fun class...its always nice to see what other people have been doing.

Copyright

The copyright project I chose to do delt with wikipedia. I think it is really awesome how all aspects of library tie in together. I made a brochure touching on the issue of incorrect citation and gave ways to correctly cite these types of pages. Overall, it was a great project I think and very useful. I did this for Catawba Co. libraries in general and CVCC. I enjoy being able to really touch on someones needs.

Librarian not getting back with me

For my copyright project I have contacted the librarian 2 times that I recently have worked wtih but she hasn't gotten back to me so I think I am going to try to visit my neighbor, Karen Foss, director of Catawba Co. libraries tomorrow so I can actually do this before it is due. I did however finish my censorship part of my powerpoint! That means only one project to go!

Collection Dev. Action

I am glad to be finished with the collection development action project. I liked doing the selections and even more the weeding but it was super time consuming. I can't wait until this is part of my job but right now it just seemed very involved. However, I didn't expect any less being as I am getting my masters and all. I wouldn't want someone to take a position who had only learned about things in books rather I am glad we are so involved with the projects we are doing. Finding good reviews was the hard part for me. I am waiting on my subscription to titlewave to be confirmed...not sure how long that will take...I think if I have a few subscriptions it will be easier!

Weeding

I went to the Taylorsville Elementary School Library on Friday to do my weeding project. I successfully weeded (pretended to) the 921's which are biographies. I wasn't able to get the exact print out of the collection list the way it was set up when we looked at one the other night in class but I was able to get all the information and go through the collection myself to look at damages or duplicates. The librarian believed this to be the least used portion of her library...only one book has been checked out this year about Bill Cosby and she said it was quickly returned. I definitely feel that this is a valuable part of an elementary school collection and Taylorsville had a diverse mix of new biographies and very old ones. I haven't began to select 5 new ones to put into the collection yet and will probably begin working on that in class. I know that the librarian suggested one on Obama and one on McCain and Palin and maybe even some actors and actoresses.

Moving right along

I am moving right along with projects in this class. I really feel that the way this class is set up helps me to understand each element of collection development before moving on to see the whole picture. I like this a lot since I have determined myself ot be an active learner. I also really enjoy the hands on that we have in this class. I didn't know I would be this submerged into libraries this early on and we just jumped right in. The hands on of each project from community analysis to selection tools and now while I am doing the weeding and selection of 5 new books to put into my library helps me to understand the value of each step in the process of collection development. I have said once before that I wasn't expecting this class to be this much fun but I am really glad that I am in it! It is time consuming but in order to be a great librarian one day I really feel that this is what it takes!

Nina

It was great to hear a public librarian speak last night in class. I was beginning to feel sort of alone in this endevor. It was good to hear that Shae is also doing the dual track. Hearing her speak about collection development really excited me. She seemed to have tons of money to spend on books compared to school libraries...though she said it ran out fast. Also, I was interested to know how much money she makes in the public library. The class went by fast and I think it was my favorite so far. I am glad to be in the "new age" of librarians such as she talked about some who were set in their ways at her library...I know some librarians that are also "stuck in the ice age!" I can't wait to have a library of my own!
